black cowboys riding white
horses down city
streets at
dusk.
as one rode by,
i hitched a ride.
we just
trotted along & i
held on, but not too
tightly.
i had told him i could
take him
anywhere he wanted to
go, but i could not
find my bearings.
my navigation
skills were not as good as
i professed they were.
i kind of wanted to
fall off so
i wouldn't have to
face
my inadequecies.
he wasn't upset
with me, just a little
flustered.
at that point we
both realized that neither
of us knew where
the horse
was going.
no longer
having to worry
about leading the horse, we
were then free
to enjoy the scenery.
passing through creeks &
old forests.
watching wildflowers
bloom & fade
as geese flew overhead.
first south then
back north again.
time pooled
into one
long moment & ended
on a mountain top
with a view
of a purple sunset.
“wasn’t that a
wonderful ride” i
said as
the horse began
walking again. “let’s head
back home?” said
the cowboy
in a quietly questioning voice.
but off into the
purple sunset
we rode. “no more
wondering”
said the horse,
“just let go”.
